The process of Green Building incorporates environmental considerations into every phase of the home building process.
That means that during the design, construction, and operation of a home we take numerous considerations into account simultaneously and consciously incorporate environmental issues into all decisions:
LOT DESIGN, PREPARATION & DEVELOPMENT Resource-efficient site design and development practices help reduce the environmental impact of improve the energy performance of a new home.
RESOURCE EFFICIENCY We start with the consideration of the environment at the design phase–when most material selections are made. We use resource efficient materials which maximize function while optimizing the use of natural resources. We reduce job-site waste by developing and implementing a construction waste-management plan. And finally we select materials based on their environmental impact taking into consideration "cradle to grave" impact.
ENERGY EFFICIENCY Regardless of climate, energy efficiency is a priority of Green Building. We utilize a "whole systems" approach to building. Energy performance does not end with increased R values, the use of renewable energy, and/or more efficient HVAC equipment. Rather, there needs to be a balance between these features and careful window selection, building envelope air sealing, duct sealing, and proper placement of air and vapor barriers from foundation to attic to create a truly HIGH-PERFORMANCE, energy-efficient home which is less expensive to operate and more comfortable to live in.
WATER EFFICIENCY Green homes conserve water both indoors and out. The average indoor daily water use in today's homes is slightly over 64 gallons. Implementing water conservation measures can reduce usage to fewer than 45 gallons without giving up any convenience.
INDOOR ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY The quality of a home's indoor air is often cited as one of the most important features of a Green Home. Increases in reports of allergies and respiratory ailments have contributed to a heightened awareness of the air we breath inside our homes. Measures that can mitigate the effects of potential contaminants include controlling the source, diluting the source, and capturing the source through filtration.
OPERATION, MAINTENANCE, AND HOME OWNER EDUCATION By providing our homeowners with a manual that explains proper operation and maintenance procedures, offers alternatives to toxic cleaning products and lawn chemicals, and points out water saving techniques, we can help assure your new Green Home will be operated at its ultimate performance level.
GLOBAL IMPACT Other issues related to home building which may have global impact are also taken into consideration (for example the selection of paints and carpets containing relatively low VOCs).
HOMEOWNERS BENEFIT FROM GREEN BUILDING. Green building is much more than just reducing a home's environmental footprint. Homeowners also realize direct benefits by owning a Green home including: lower operating costs, increased comfort, improved indoor air quality, enhanced durability and less maintenance.
